She has written four books on educational topics as well as a training manual for Peace Corps Volunteers. As a member of Pine Island Writers, she is learning to write prose-poetry on topics ranging from encounters with nature, to incarceration, to ancient and not-so-ancient political history. In her former life as a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Helen taught undergraduate courses on human rights, international development, race and racism, nonviolent social movements and argumentative writing. She is a volunteer with the archaeology salvage team at the Center and is helping to put together an educational collection of ancient Calusa artifacts. On the Island, Helen has become a volunteer docent at the Randall Research Center, where she gives tours of the Smith Burial Mound and assists with the training of new volunteers.
